Following the withdrawal of EU authorisation for the 10 traditional smoke flavouring products, the food industry must reformulate its recipes by 2026 and 2029, notably by turning to new substitute flavouring solutions
Regulatory background:
Implementing Regulation (EU) 2024/2067 prohibits the use of smoke flavouring primary products SF-001 to SF-010 within the European Union.

Ranges of liquid and powder alternatives developed in Grasse (06):
Faced with the European ban on smoke flavouring primary products (SFPP) imposed by Regulation (EU) 2024/2067, manufacturers must reformulate their recipes. To meet this challenge, Expressions Aromatiques has developed, at its Grasse site, synthetic (“smoke”) and natural (“woody”) alternatives. These solutions preserve the organoleptic profile of your applications while ensuring compliance with the regulation.
Based since 1999 in the Grasse basin (Mouans-Sartoux), the world cradle of flavours and perfume, Expressions Aromatiques puts its industrial expertise at the service of international food industry players. ISO 22000 certified, our company combines flavouring know-how with scientific rigour to meet the technological and regulatory changes in our sector.
The Regulatory Background and Key Deadlines:
On 1 August 2024, Implementing Regulation (EU) 2024/2067 was published, prohibiting the use of smoke flavouring primary products (SFPP – Smoke Flavouring Primary Products) within the European Union. This ban applies directly to derived products containing these raw materials.
Deadline for food categories such as snacks, crisps, savoury biscuits, sauces and ketchup, oils and marinades.
Deadline for cheeses, minced or processed meats, processed fish and fishery products.
To effectively replace SFPPs without altering the sensory experience of your products, our laboratories have developed two ranges of alternatives suited to industrial technical constraints.
This range was developed to offer varied organoleptic profiles close to those of traditional smoke flavourings.
Application Examples & Dosages
1.50 g/kg to 10.00 g/kg (e.g. LA 26475/1, SA 26422).
1.50 g/kg to 14.00 g/kg (e.g. LA 19113/2, SA 26422).
3.00 g/kg to 10.00 g/kg (e.g. SA 26422, SA 26592).
2.00 g/kg to 14.00 g/kg (e.g. LA 26475/1, SA 2692).
In line with the guidelines of EFFA (European Flavour Association), it is recommended not to combine the term “smoke” with the designation “natural”. Our natural flavourings are therefore presented under the name “Woody”.
Application Examples & Dosages
2.00 g/kg to 8.00 g/kg (e.g. LN 28590/1, SN 29030).
3.00 g/kg to 5.00 g/kg (e.g. LN 29027, LN 28590/1).
3.00 g/kg to 7.00 g/kg (e.g. LN 29029, SN 29030).
2.50 g/kg to 8.00 g/kg (e.g. LN 29027, LN 29028).
The EU adopted Implementing Regulation (EU) 2024/2067 on 1 August 2024 to gradually phase out the use of smoke flavouring primary products (SFPP) and their derivatives in the Member States. This decision aims to ensure a high level of consumer health protection.
According to the recommendations of EFFA (European Flavour Association), it is advisable not to combine the words “smoke” and “natural” in the designation of flavourings. Accordingly, at Expressions Aromatiques, our natural alternatives are identified under the designation “Woody” (e.g. LN 29027, LN 28590/1, SN 29030), while the synthetic alternatives bear the name “Smoke” (e.g. LA 19113/2, SA 26422).
The regulation provides for two deadlines depending on product categories:
